Artist's Statement |
| My
aim as an artist/designer is to create objects that are both functional
and sculptural. Simple,
organic forms and subtle, natural colours characterise my work.
My style is informed by and reflects–in an indirect, abstracted
way–the structural details and forms I see around me in Tasmania's
natural environment. My furniture is hand made, and the hands-on, crafting part of the making process is very important to me. A handcrafted element in a piece allows creativity to continue beyond the initial design process, resulting in a sense of satisfaction and involvement with the piece. I am fascinated with textile based techniques, and am interested in exploring innovative ways in which they can be used within the context of furniture and functional art objects. My interest in textiles forms the basis for the materials, construction and processes of my work, while my observation of Tasmania's natural environment dictates form, pattern and colour. |

| Sally Brown was born in Tasmania in 1982.
She grew up in a rural/bush
setting, with frequent visits to the remote south-west, which led to her observation and appreciation of the natural environment. Sally studied at the University of Tasmania’s School of Fine Arts in Hobart between 2000 and 2004, where she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in Furniture Design, with First Class Honours. In 2000 Sally moved to Cygnet, in Tasmania’s south, where she now lives and bases her art practice. |
